How GPA Calculation Works

Grade Point Average (GPA) is a numerical representation of your academic performance, calculated by converting letter grades to grade points and averaging them based on credit hours. The most common system is the 4.0 scale, where an A equals 4.0 points, but weighted scales can go higher for advanced courses.

Understanding your GPA is crucial for college admissions, scholarship eligibility, academic standing, and graduation requirements. Our calculator handles both standard 4.0 scale and weighted 5.0 scale calculations, accounting for course difficulty levels.

GPA Calculation Formula

Basic GPA Formula

GPA = Total Quality Points รท Total Credit Hours

Quality Points = Grade Points ร— Credit Hours

Example:
Course 1: A (4.0) ร— 3 credits = 12 quality points
Course 2: B (3.0) ร— 4 credits = 12 quality points
Course 3: C (2.0) ร— 2 credits = 4 quality points

GPA = (12 + 12 + 4) รท (3 + 4 + 2) = 28 รท 9 = 3.11

Grade Point Values (4.0 Scale)

  • A+ / A = 4.0
  • A- = 3.7
  • B+ = 3.3
  • B = 3.0
  • B- = 2.7
  • C+ = 2.3
  • C = 2.0
  • C- = 1.7
  • D+ = 1.3
  • D = 1.0
  • D- = 0.7
  • F = 0.0

Weighted GPA (5.0 Scale)

For advanced courses, additional points are added:

  • Regular courses: Standard grade points
  • Honors courses: +0.5 points
  • AP/IB courses: +1.0 points

Example: An A in AP Biology = 4.0 + 1.0 = 5.0 points

Examples

Example 1: Standard GPA Calculation

Courses:

  • English (4 credits): B+ โ†’ 3.3 ร— 4 = 13.2 points
  • Math (3 credits): A โ†’ 4.0 ร— 3 = 12.0 points
  • Science (3 credits): B โ†’ 3.0 ร— 3 = 9.0 points
  • History (2 credits): A- โ†’ 3.7 ร— 2 = 7.4 points

Total: 41.6 quality points รท 12 credit hours = 3.47 GPA

Example 2: Weighted GPA with AP Courses

Courses:

  • AP Chemistry (4 credits): A โ†’ (4.0 + 1.0) ร— 4 = 20.0 points
  • Honors Math (3 credits): B+ โ†’ (3.3 + 0.5) ร— 3 = 11.4 points
  • Regular English (3 credits): A- โ†’ 3.7 ร— 3 = 11.1 points

Total: 42.5 quality points รท 10 credit hours = 4.25 weighted GPA

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. Weighted GPA gives extra points for advanced courses (Honors, AP, IB), potentially exceeding 4.0. Colleges often recalculate using their own weighting systems.
How do I improve my GPA?
Focus on earning higher grades in future courses, especially those with more credit hours. Consider retaking failed courses if allowed. Taking additional courses with high grades can also help, but the impact diminishes as you accumulate more credits.
Do colleges prefer weighted or unweighted GPA?
Most colleges look at both and often recalculate using their own methods. They consider course rigor (weighted GPA context) alongside raw performance (unweighted GPA). Taking challenging courses with good grades is generally viewed favorably.
What if my school uses a different grading scale?
Grading scales vary by school and country. Some use numerical grades, others use different letter grade systems. Our calculator uses the standard U.S. 4.0 scale. Consult your academic advisor for conversions from other systems.
Should I include failed or repeated courses?
Include all courses that count toward your GPA according to your school's policy. Some schools replace grades when you repeat courses, others average them, and some count both. Check your institution's specific grade replacement policy.
