Calculate sales tax for any Canadian province or territory โ GST, HST, PST, and QST.
Understanding GST, HST and PST in Canada
Canada uses three types of sales tax, and which ones apply to you depends on the province where the sale takes place:
- GST (Goods and Services Tax) โ A 5% federal tax applied in every province and territory.
- HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) โ A single combined tax used in Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland & Labrador, and PEI. It replaces both GST and PST in those provinces.
- PST (Provincial Sales Tax) โ A provincial-only tax charged separately in BC (7%), Saskatchewan (6%), and Manitoba (7%). Quebec uses its own version called QST (9.975%).
Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut have no provincial sales tax โ only the 5% federal GST applies.
GST/HST Input Tax Credits for Businesses
If you are a GST/HST-registered business, you can claim Input Tax Credits (ITCs) to recover the GST/HST you paid on business purchases. This prevents tax-on-tax stacking. For example, if you paid $130 in HST on supplies, you can deduct that $130 from the HST you collect from customers. You must file GST/HST returns quarterly or annually depending on your revenue.

FAQs
When to Use This Calculator
Use this when making purchases in Canada and need to estimate the total cost after sales tax, when filing GST/HST returns for your business, or when determining pre-tax price from a receipt showing only the total.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using the wrong province's rate โ tax rates vary from 5% (Alberta) to 15% (Ontario, Atlantic provinces); always select the correct province.
- Applying GST/HST to exempt goods โ basic groceries, prescription drugs, and most medical devices are zero-rated (0% GST/HST).
- Forgetting PST on top of GST in BC, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba โ these provinces charge both GST and PST as separate taxes.
