How It Works
Computes volume in cubic feet, converts to cubic yards, and estimates weight in tons based on material density.
Formula
Volume (cu ft) = L × W × Depth
Cu Yards = Volume ÷ 27
Tons = Cu Yds × Density
Example
Driveway 40×12 ft, 3 in deep:
120 cu ft = 4.44 cu yds. Tons: 4.44 × 1.4 = 6.2 tons
When to Use This Calculator
Use before ordering bulk gravel delivery. Gravel is sold by the cubic yard or ton; suppliers need both.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Depth in feet not inches — calculator expects inches; 3 in = 0.25 ft.
- Not adding 10% buffer — settling and spreading losses are common.
- Confusing cu yds with cu ft — 1 cu yd = 27 cu ft.
Frequently Asked Questions
Driveway depth?
4–6 inches minimum. 3-layer system (6" base + 4" mid + 2" surface) is ideal.
Tons per cubic yard?
Standard gravel: 1.35–1.5 t/cu yd. Use 1.4 for estimates.
Haul myself?
Pickup truck safely carries ~1 ton (0.7 cu yd). Large projects: bulk delivery.
Best gravel for drainage?
